The audio-lingual method

Used for teaching a foreign language, the audio-lingual method is one of the most important methods to teach a new language, as many teachers in the world, they have decided to keep teaching in the same methodology as it was taught 60 years ago. Nowadays, you can count the few teachers that uses a different methodology more than just writing first in the new language. After knowing a lot of foreign language learners, you can notice what can be inferred in the confidence part when they have to expose themselves in the speaking skill.

Students of a foreign language need to listen the language before than writing and reading. This will help them to catch the correct pronunciation and to record and memorize words in an effectively way. It’s understandable that there will be a lot of words that will not make sense at the beginning, but later on, the student will get used to it and his brain will make a connection with the vocabulary he had using it correctly.

This method is known as the Army method since it was developed in the United States during World War II. The name “Audiolingualism” was given by the professor Nelson Brooks (1964)

Based on Skinner’s behaviorism theory, Behavioral psychology influenced Audiolingualism, as human will have a stimulus by listening, and as a result, the professor will get a response from the student. We can tell that there is a 50/50 when we are going to talk about the Learning forms that people will learn in a better way. For example, some people have developed and conditioned their mind to receive and learn by listening. This kind of person will find really hard to learn using a reading form. And it’s the same for people who will learn in the opposite way. To get a good response and a good quality of teaching, it’s necessary that the student get suitable professors because the student will learn from what the professor teaches and will repeat it in the same way it was heard by the student.
